Urban areas are pivotal in addressing climate change, as they are home to over half of the global population and are responsible for approximately 70% of global CO₂ emissions. Projections indicate that by 2050, 68% of the world’s population will reside in cities, intensifying the need for sustainable urban development. At the same time, cities serve as economic, social, and cultural hubs, making their role in climate action crucial.
In September 2024, we had the opportunity to conduct photo storytelling during the largest Climate Week NYC to date, capturing New York City’s strides toward sustainable living. Collaborating with the C40 Cities communications team, who generously granted us creative freedom, was a privilege for which we are deeply grateful.
During a week, we traversed various neighbourhoods and event venues, documenting active and sustainable mobility in the city, but also the United Nations headquarters and the Climate Group popular events. Our lenses captured scenes of walking, running, rollerblading, cycling, the use of brand-new electric buses, and rides on the iconic New York City subway. We also photographed parks, gardens, local markets offering proximity products, and urban renewable energy installations.
A standout moment was immersing ourselves among the youth of Fridays for Future to document the climate march that crossed the Brooklyn Bridge—a fortunate opportunity, given its status as one of the city’s most photogenic landmarks.
Additionally, we portrayed organizational leaders from a unique perspective, participating in an innovative communication portal organized by the United Nations Museum. This platform connected C40 representatives, international authorities, young activists, and experts in New York City with individuals in Africa and South America, facilitating uncommon dialogues.
This project not only allowed us to showcase New York City’s commitment to sustainability but also highlighted the vital role cities play in combating climate change. Through our storytelling, we aimed to inspire further action and awareness, emphasizing that urban centers are at the forefront of the global sustainability movement.
