Buildings & Construction: Raising the Profile of the Sleeping Giant

Although it is rarely discussed, buildings and construction account for 21% of the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change, making it one of the most polluting sectors.

As part of its mission, 10 Billion Solutions works with sectors that have the greatest potential to mitigate climate change. For over three years, we have collaborated with the building and construction sector, helping them communicate the root causes of the problem and the available solutions.

Since 2021, we have worked with the German and French development agencies, GIZ and AFD, on 360° communication for their Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings. Our support has included ongoing communication advisory services, designing and producing multimedia content, and conceptualizing, executing, and facilitating the launch of publications and events—both in-person and virtual.

We also developed communication strategies and facilitated sessions for ADEME during their support of the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) Annual Assembly, held in Nice in 2022 under the French presidency of the EU Council.

At the last four major climate conferences (COP26 in Glasgow, COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, COP28 in Dubai, and COP29 in Baku), we led communication efforts for the Buildings Pavilion, spotlighting the sector’s decarbonization and resilience initiatives championed by the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) and its members.

At COP29, we expanded our work within the sector by collaborating with the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA)—a key player representing all cement and concrete producers, which contribute approximately 8-10% of energy-related emissions. For the GCCA, we provided complete photographic coverage of the Concrete Future Pavilion at COP29.

This year, 2024, marked a significant milestone with the Chaillot Declaration, which concluded the first Buildings and Climate Global Forum. This declaration launched an inter-ministerial collaboration to accelerate the decarbonization and resilience of the built environment sector. 10 Billion Solutions provided advisory services to the Ministry of Ecological Transition, supporting the organization and the facilitation of high-level events.
